To finally get rid of annoying popups I wanted to completely move to Firefox.
I uninstalled all IE components, set Firefox as the default browser, set all
security zone within IE at high. However I keep having the following problem:
Whenever I open a site in Firefox a link is activated that opens one or two
popup windows in IE. I have tried everything but no change. I think it is
outrages that a browser cannot be remove from a system without loosing
funtionality (such as system updates etc). I now understand why the European
Union has repeatedly sued Microsoft for millions of Dollars for their way
they have integrated the browser in the system. Can somebody please help? I
do not want to see IE popups while using Firefox.

Hi MEP,
Try to open the Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs, then there
click on this option:
Set program access and default, you will see multiple choices one of them
set the browser default and there is a Radio Button beside Internet Explorer
like this:
( ) Internet Explorer uncheck this Radio button if it's been checked.
The same on the window which pop-up click on Tools >> Internet Options then
click on Programs Tab scroll down to the check box and uncheck it:
[ ] Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser
HTH.
Please let us know your result.

Dear nass,

thanks for your answer.

Yes I did set Firefox as my default browser and the check box next to IE is
unchecked and yes the other box you mentioned is unchecked as well.

Regarding that control panel. When open it and select "set Program access"
the only thing I can change is under "custom". There I find under "choose a
default Web browser" that a round little box is always checked that says "Use
current Web Browers" and the two buttons for IE and Firefox are bot
unchecked. To the right of the Firefox button a square check box is chcked
that reads "Enable access to this program". So I think I have done everything
I can to "mute" IE. However, apparently some links when opened in Firefox are
still too strong and open the IE.

By the way since I changed all these things the IE pop ups occur much rarer.
However, I do not understand why I have to endure the Microsoft IE terror at
all.

Best
