Explorer move problems

Why haven't I heard of people complaining about how
Windows Explorer moves files and directories without
asking "Are you sure?"

This happens when you are moving your mouse in Explorer,
and by mistake, touch the left mouse button and instantly
you have moved a whole directory structure to somewhere
else on your drive. This happens so fast that you
sometimes don't even realize that you have moved something.

I am the Information Services Manager for an Architecture
firm with 80 employees. I can't believe that we are the
only ones experiencing this problem. The users move
directories (by mistake) everyday. Some of these
directories contain 1GB of data, and is moved in a split
second, so the user doesn't know what they have done. I
have asked all the users to only use the right mouse key
to move and copy, but the problem still persists.

If Microsoft would have Explorer just ask "Are you sure
you want to MOVE X to Y?" then the problem would go away.
I have had no luck asking Microsoft for help and I have
not found a third party add-on that fixes this BUG. I
don't want to replace Explorer because the users are used
to Explorer and they don't what to learn a new program.

Any ideas?

I prefer to make prople feel stupid about it. It's well known. But only the mouse unskilled have an issue with it. Ctrl + Z (or Edit - Undo) reverses the move. And it's not true that there is nothing. Start has the option.

Ctrl + Z works fine if you know you did something that you
want to undo, but the users don't know they did it.
You say "Start has the option", where?

Start - Control Panel - Start Menu And Taskbar - Start Menu - Customise - Advanced - Enable Draging and Dropping (I hate typing this - it's so long). This also kills right click on Start.

I tried denying delete on a folder, but that still allowed moving.

There is a bug where drag and drop stops working. I can tell you how to do this but the other consequences are unknown.

Delete these two registry keys
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00000320-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{0000010e-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

but you'd be MAD, MAD, MAD to do this.

I'm sorry there seems to be some confusion. I am
referring to the file manager portion of Explorer (not the
Start Menu). Even if this did stop the problem, this is
not a good solution, because of all the other problems it
creates.

All I want to do is have Windows ask "Are you sure that
you want to move x to y?" This way the user would be
notified that they did something.

I would love to have an offical response from Microsoft on
why they took this ability out when they went from File
Manager in Windows 3.1 to Windows Explorer.

Well you obviously haven't had any users with startup programs running twice or most entries disappearing. They do the same on the start menu (which are folders after all) - but here it changes the registry as well. This is all you can do. You won't get an official responce from MS unless the actual programmer/designer happens to see your post and feels the legal dept won't kill him for talking. Both are unlikely (but happens very occasionally). Ring them and pay if you want a response. You'll regret the waste of cash.

Perhaps encourage your users to play solitaire or spider solitaire which are dragging skill learning programs.

Explorer is NOT a file manager, it is a namespace browser. Part of the namespace are folders.

| Start - Control Panel - Start Menu And Taskbar - Start Menu - Customise - Advanced - Enable
Draging and Dropping

....does *_not_* prevent "Dragging and Dropping" to/from Windows Explorer, Desktop, Quick Launch bar,
....

That setting applies *_only_* to the [Start]-menu, as in
"Start Menu - Customise - Advanced - Enable Dragging and Dropping"

This is one of those rare occasions, in XP, where logic prevails.
