On boot up, after logging on to a user account, it takes approximately an
hour before (a) windows explorer will show more than My Documents (any
attempt to browse to other directories is met with a search light and nothing
more (b) I cannot use Internet Explorer to go to any sites (firefox works
just fine) (c) this computer, which is the printer server, will not allow any
printing, (d) I can't use any control panel applets, nor in MMC, expand any
of the items in there.

I upgraded to SP3 to see if that will fix the problem and now, on logon, it
freezes at Configuring Outlook Express (I can complete logon by ending
process Setup50.exe).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it happen only with this particular user or it happen with all other
accounts including Admin?
What happen you if you logged as Admin, does behave okay?
If other accounts work fine i will look for a damaged/corrupt user profile.

Use this tool to see what taken the most usage of the CPU on your machine.

Have a look in the Event Viewer and send us the error messages you will see
there in your next post:
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the
error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post.


Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the Non/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post

First of all, thanks for a very thorough reply.

I rebooted and tried to log on as Administrator. After 10 minutes of
staring at the Welcome screen, I did a hard reboot and tried again. Same
result.

I have over the past year tested the memory both with the tool you suggested
and with memtest. I have run the Hitachi Disk Test tool to test the hard
drive. All cambe out OK.

I have scanned with Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition, AdAware, Spybot S
& D, several times each, all to no avail.

I have previously cleared the cache of both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Once I can access again, I will look again at the Event Viewer for errors.
In the past when looking, I found nothing remarkable - for some reason,
although it was running, I was warned that the CPU fan was not running.

I am considering doing an in-place upgrade but need to make a slipstreamed
SP3 disk to do so, although about a year ago, I did that with a slipstreamed
SP2 disk without any change in behaviour.

check your kernel process time.
task manager -> 3th tab -> view -> kernel time.
Do you see a lot of red ? or a lot of green ?
what is the avarege red load ?
what is the avarage green load ?
