Explorer is slow to display contents

When windows explorer opens, the right panel stays blank for a long time
until the files in the hard drive are listed.
Defragmenting makes no difference.
Is there a registry adjustment that I can make to speed things along?
 
In a later post you wrote that you upgraded to XP from ME.

If your computer is old enough to have come with ME pre-installed, the
hardware may be having a tough time keeping up with the increased demands of
XP.

This is a rather modern computer p4, 2.6mhz, 400fsb, a gig of rambus. Over a
terrabyte of storage on 7 hard drives. Runs good.
It is different from the computer in the other thread.
 
That helped some, delay decreased to 30 seconds.
Waving flashlight turns to hourglass, explorer processor usage goes to max.
I think that it might be a usb issue, there are various non ms usb devices,
including a usb2 pci card.
This has been an incremental process, no specific event brought this about.
This is not a big problem, just an annoyance.
