Explorer hangs

I recently downloaded the new service pack and all the
critical updates. Now when I click my right mouse button
to access explorer.exe it hangs and I have to reboot. I
can access my control panel and get around but as soon as
I use the right button it hangs. When I reboot it has to
end "system sheel extension" and then "explorer.exe".

How do I fix this?

Thanks
Kim

Re: right-click on anything, hangs explorer-exe so that it needs to be
killed and restarted.

I had this problem in W2K SP4. I searched everywhere and tried all
suggestions I found but nothing worked. Nor could I discover any cause
of the problem such as a virus or spyware. Very frustrating--I was
just about ready to do a complete reinstall.

Then, something I noticed while fixing a different problem on another
workstation led me to consider either profile corruption or user
account corruption as a possible cause.

Test this by creating a new user account with the same permissions as
the account that is having problems. Log in as that new user so that
Windows creates a profile. Test for the right-click problem. If the
problem isn't there with the new account, double-check by copying the
problem-account's profile over to the new account. Then test the new
account again. If explorer.exe now hangs when you right click, that
profile is bad and needs to be recreated. In that case, don't delete
the old profile right away, just move it out of C:\Documents and
Settings so that Windows will create a new profile at next logon. That
way, you can recycle parts of the old profile as needed (Favorites,
etc).

Good luck.
