System: 2 proc 883 Intel Coppermine Procs, ASUS CUV4X-D Board, 1 GB PC133 RAM
The Machine has had every update and is current; Build shows as Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 (Service Pack 1).
[uhh guys, sp2???

Anyway, I have been having a problem in explorer for quite some time on this system but have been lazily working around the bug by using the cmdline to do simple tasks that are quicker to do VIA GUI. All of my other single proc systems I do not have this bug
Repro steps
1. open a folde
2. highlight a fil
3. right-click it or press the 'Delete' key
Expected Results
menu shows up to chooes open, open as, ..., propertie
Actual Results
Explorer process hangs with (Not Responding) in the title bar. After anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, the properties menu decides to show up

I have tried remedying this with single click mode, normal double click mode, tweaking performance settings etc, but this is a real problem. Working from the CMD line is getting tireing... I am thinking this may be because it is a dual proc system, but that is such a lame reason to be seeing this; so I don't think that is the correct answer. Another data point, if I right click a folder, everything is normal; no lag and the system does what is expected., I only have this problem when I right click or 'Delete' a file.
Anyone else seeing this who has fixed it in some magical way

Thanks

Right click hang
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 819101
Temporary Decline in Performance Occurs When You Right-Click a File or
Folder in Windows Explorer

When you right-click a file or folder in Windows Explorer, the CPU usage
goes to 100 percent while the shortcut menu is displayed. CPU usage returns
to the correct level when the shortcut menu is closed.
To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.
Method 1
Turn off the transition effects for menus and ToolTips. To do this, follow
these steps:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Display, and then click the Appearance tab.
On the Appearance tab, click Effects.
In the Effects dialog box, click to clear the Use the following transition
effect for menus and tooltips check box, and then click OK two times.
Method 2
Click the folder or file that you want (select it) before you right-click it
to display the shortcut menu.

see my message today, Jan. 4. I have exactly same issue. However, on three computers. Now, just did update to Adobe Acrobat and that seemed to cure it on one of three cmputers acting the same way

Bizzarre thing is, my CPU does not spike to 100%, it actually just sits there, like it is stuck in kiwaittimeout or something else in the kernel, perhaps it is waiting for a callback that is stuck in a thread talking to the GDI layer? anyway, after some interval of time, (i think it is pretty reguarly 2 minutes, [I was exaggerating for effect before ;D]) I do not know if that is the crit sec timeout value or what for explorer... This is not the same as KB819946 for sure. The workarounds do not apply to this behavior. I will try installing Adobe 6.0 - if that fixes it, that is really wierd...

(something blew up, not sure if my last post made it...)
There is a possibility that Adobe 5.0 is the problem here.

Uninstall adobe 5.0, and you will find that %systemdrive%\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.ocx does not uninstall... it is in use by explorer for some reason.
If you do not want to reboot to fix this, after uninstalling all Adobe (Acrobat Reader) < 6.0.1 kill all explorer.exe's and C+A+D and open a cmd window, then nav to %systemdrive%\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX and del the AcroIEHelper.ocx file. Then rmdir the %systemdrive%\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0 and you are set. Problem solved.

Thanks for the post honeybee, awesome observation - you rock!

I can confirm that Adobe 5.0 does affect explorer performance. As suggested by timebridge I uninstalled version 5.0, did reboot, deleted the remaining files by deleting program files\adobe. My explorer performance is noticeably better (menus display faster, folders open faster), I have installed adobe version 6 and I still have good performance. I will have to run for a while to see if this cleared up the “right click, explorer hang†problem.
Thanks to timebridge for the information
