I got some kind of virus and am running my applications on
the task manager because the explorer.exe program won't
run. I tried to manually start it from the task manager
and it appears in the system process list for a second and
disappears. Is there any way I can fix it without the
windows cd which I don't have at my present location?

Thanks for any help,
Hank

Try the Windows Knowledge Base at Microsoft. I had a similar problem and it
was the result of a file called iconfig.exe that came with an Olympus card
reader. Your problem is probably not from the same file but it may be
similar. Try the Knowledge Base first. If that doesn't work, get to the task
manager by using control alt delete. Start shutting of processes and after
you shut off each process, try the Explorer. For a list of processes that
should be running try Black Vipers site. In general Windows won't let you
turn off anything you really need. However, don't try this with your unsaved
term paper up in the word processor.

As an aside, I could get Explorer-like functions by opening up My Computer.
