I've been tryingn to install a network card in my computer
(AMD Athlon 750Mhz, 512MB, Win XP Home Ed.). I've tried
two different cards, one SMC Ethernet card and one Netgear
wireless USB adapter.

After I get it installed and restart the computer,
explorer.exe begins using 100% of the CPU and uses memory
at a rate of about 1MB per second until the machine
crashes.

I've uninstalled McAfee Internet Security and Firewall to
see if they were conflicting with them somehow. Still no
luck.

The funny thing is that I can plug my cable modem directly
into a USB port and it works just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

The AMD is OK and the SMC ethernet card is on the HCL.
The driver for the SMC isn't 'digitally signed' but it is
on the HCL.

I'm going back through WinXP installtion now with the card
installed hoping that maybe it will see it during
installation and fix the problem that way.

so the card isnt plug n play doent it get detcted after
installing it? or is the problem XP crashes soon
afterwardsso u cnat get it to detect it

XP detects it fine. Installs the drivers. When I restart
the computer and open the task manager, explorer.exe is
using 100% of the CPU and keeps taking more and more
memory until there is none left.

I just ran back through the XP installation and it seems
to be working better but I still can't connect to my
router or the internet.

Just thought I would follow up in case anyone was still
reading this thread...

I uninstalled McAfee Firewall. That didn't work, but then
I ran winsockxpfix.exe and it worked like a charm.
Apparently, the problem was with the McAfee Firewall all
along. Then after I uninstalled it, there were some dll's
and registry entries that were affecting the winsock
functionality. That's where the winsockxpfix.exe came
into play. It cleared everything up for me.
