Explorer.exe problems

Hello,
I'm having a problem with a Win2K system. When opening "My
computer", it initially (i.e.: after reboot) takes up to
30 seconds for the window to load. The delays gradually
get longer, until explorer.exe starts timing out. This
causes problems for other applications - for instance
Outlook becomes unable to open attachments to an email.

The system is a P3/1ghz, with 512mb of ram and a 40gb hard
drive, 30gb of which is free. It has Win2K Pro, sp4.

This affects all profiles on the system. I have run the
usual maintenance: chkdisk (at boot), defrag, cleanup. I
have also reinstalled sp4, which I am given to understand
reinstalls explorer.exe.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions? Anywhere else to look
for the culprit, any solutions? I greatly appreciate it.
