explorer.exe error when accessing My Computer on Windows 2000 PC

I have Windows 2000 with service pack 4 on my PC and I use SBC Global
(dial-up) to access the Internet. Every since I launched and access the
Internet using both SBC Global shortcut and Internet Explorer shortcut at
same time (I was logged in both ways), I get an Explorer.exe error when I try
to open MY Computer, the Start Icon and the Recycle Bin from my workspace.
It tells me a explorer.exe program error has occured, error log created and I
must reboot. Plus my icons in the workspace tray (bottom right) start
disappearing. However, if I try to open My Computer, etc. again, they open
fine. I am using Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1.

Is there a solution without trying to fix Internet Explorer using my Windows
2000 Professional disk? Last time I tried this, I was unable to launch
Windows and had to rebuild my Pc from scratch. I have tried to repair
Internet Explorer from Add/Remove Program but still get the error. I have
also ran virsus packages and one package said I had the Sdbot worm and it
was removed but I still get the explorer.exe error. I even tried
uninstalling Internet
Explorer so I can reinstall it and the system would not let me uninstall even
in Safe Mode.

I went through the errors messages from Microsoft support but did not find a
solution for Windows 2000 PC. I had downloaded service pack 4 not to long
ago on my pc but I did not see a batch for this kind of error with Windows
2000 Pc but I am not sure even if that pack will cause this.

Any suggestions?

Not what you wanted to hear but you're probably looking at a clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

My colleague had a similar problem. Turns out that when the UPromise
toolbar (in Internet Explorer) was removed, the problem was resolved.

Also try another browser like Firefox. It's not necessarily a fix, but
at least you will be able to learn that if you have no problems with FF,
then it's definitely an IE issue. I understand the Yahoo toolbar causes
the same problem.
