I'm running XP Home SP1 preloaded by Dell (purchased late September this
year) on a P4 2.6 GHz, 512 RAM and 110GB HD. Suddenly, without obvious
cause, when turning the computer off the message that IE Explorer won't
close properly shows and I have to click on 'End' to get the machine to
close. On start-up, a window comes up saying that there is a fault with
explorer and would I like to report it. I OK that, and explorer closes and
re-opens. Then the system seems to work fine but Notepad will not open -
there may be other problems that I haven't come across. Dell suggested that
I try the scan disc routines found by right-clicking on C in My Computer
before shutting down. This results in a very lengthy scan on re-boot but
nothing has changed.

Can anyone here offer any help? Many thanks. David

David,

My first guess is that you have installed a program that has a shell
extension that is malfunctioning. Have you installed any programs or
devices right around the time that the phenomenon started? Hopefully you
will be able to identify the offending software through a process of
removal, trial and error.

If you can't figure it out, this would be a good one to contact us about
for assistance. Determining why things crashed by reading that log is
pretty tricky buisiness.
