Running w2k with all updates and patches.

At random times when I click on the contents of my Windows Explorer, I get
this error message:
*****************
The instruction at "0x7cf4e345" refereced memory at :"0x0011b563". The
memroy could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program
Click CANCEL todebug the program
*****************

Then when I click ok, to terminate, I get this message:
****************
Microsoft Internet Explorer
An error has occurred in Internet Explorer.
Interent Explorer will now close.

If you continue to experience problmes, please restart your computer.
****************
Remember, it was not IE that I had open, it was Windows Explorer. I message
appears to be mixed up somehow.

This began when I was having issues with a harddrive. The old harddrive was
determined to have a controller issue and I was warned to back everything up
and change my harddrve out before it failed. I Imaged my system to DVD.
Then I recovered the Image to a NEW harddrive. I still have the issue.
I'm not sure if the imaging of a bad drive can cause this or not. Ran
scandisk (nortons version to recover cluster issues but did not find any).

My mermory seems to check out okay duing boot. Not sure how to better test
the memory unless I swap it out. I realize it gives this appearance.

Any thoughts on this Issue?
Thanks in advance

Try repairing or reinstalling Internet Explorer. There is no guarantee
that it will fix the problem but try to eliminate it as a cause. As for
the error message being mixed up between Internet Explorer and Windows
Explorer, the two programs are tied together like the Gordian Knot.
Windows Explorer cannot run without IE and nowadays a large number of
problems and error with Explorer.exe are actually caused by Internet
Explorer. IE sneezes and Explorer.exe has a heart attack.

Thanks, I will do that.
Any thoughts to what I've said about using an image software on a harddrive
that is known to have issues. Can this corrupt the image?

Can't say for sure it could be, but I would think though that the
imaging software would give you an error message or somehow or other
inform you that it couldn't copy files because of disk corruption or
other. I mean, it would seem unlikely that the software would copy
broken files. On the other hand if the operating system was broken when
you imaged it, well you will get a broken OS on the new drive.

I've already deleted the uninstall files for IE, therefore, not sure how to
reinstall. My CD will detect that it is the same or new, therefore, will
not re-install it.

I believe I have to go to the Registry somewhere and change the name of the
folder.. to trick the computer into thinking IE is not installed. But I
can't remember where to do this. Any other suggestions as to how I should
go about to do this.

Also, I tried different memory and get the same error message. I do believe
your correct in stating that the IE browser needs to be reinstalled.

Non of these options worked, however, I restored from a previous Image...and
now in the process of re-installing all of my Programming/Development
software.

Thanks for the help.. I should be done by midnight.

Hi JCO,

I think following statement is necessary:

Please note that Microsoft do not support cloned or ghosted systems that
were not deployed following the support Microsoft process. Please see the
following for more information:

Duplication
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;298491

Windows XP

828287 Unsupported Sysprep scenarios
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;828287

Sysprep is a tool that is designed for system administrators, Original
Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and others who must automatically deploy
the Windows XP operating system on multiple computers. After you perform
the initial setup steps on a single computer, you can run the Sysprep tool
to prepare the sample computer for cloning.

I'll appreciate your understanding

Whatever!
I personally will create an image of my system as a backup... to me, it is
the best way to backup your system.

Thanks anyway.
