Can anyone help? When I try to open a folder which
contains pictures from my camera the folder window opens
and then immediatly disappears. Sometime I get an error
message "Windows Explorer has encountered an problem and
needs to close" and sometimes not. If I do get the error
message, as soon as I cose the window the desktop gets
cleared and rebuilt without my folder being open. If I try
and access the pictures from an application like Corel
Paint, when the open dialouge box gets to the right folder
I get the error message again and the program disappears.
I have copied some of the files (with great difficulty) on
to a laptop running Windows XP Pro with the same or worse
results. Anyone got any suggestions?

Tanks to Mary Sauer's guidance which gave me a clue, I think I have isolated
the problem. The virtual memory on both the PC's which gave errors was set
at 1.5Gbyte. I changed this to let Windows XP manage the size of the virtual
memory and rebooted. This did not cure the problem which seemed to be caused
by the very existence of Corel Paint version 7 native graphic files (*.cpt)
in a folder. However, it may have somehow caused the files to be corrupt? I
could (sometimes) accesses the files using Corel Paint and with some trouble
resaved them in jpeg format deleting the original .cpt file via the "open"
dialog box. Gradually the PC's have become more stable. I have yet to track
down all of the .cpt files but have most of them. The solution I came up
with is a little irritating as I cannot save masks and of course jpeg is a
lossy format so I don't want to do to many "saves"
