Explorer displays wrong ICON

I just installed a DVD +/- RW. I noticed that after it was installed when I
go to explorer the DVD is displayed as a CompactFlash/MicroDrive(E:) and not
as a DVD/CD drive can you explain why and how to change it to a DVD if
possible.

The DVD manufacture told me to upgrade my busmaster chip set and BIOS which
I did, but that did not fix the problem

Intel technical support said, “This issue is most likely related to the
operating system. We recommend you test a clean install of the operating
system on a freshly formatted hard disk drive to ensure that the operating
system is running properly. If you do not wish to perform a clean
installation of the operating system, please contact the manufacturer of your
operating system for assistance.â€

Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

Hi Bill,

Hard to say, so all I can offer is a few suggestions that may or may not
resolve the problem.

#1, CD-ROMs were typically installed and ran fine with the old 40 wire EIDE
cable, and when people upgraded to a DVD R/W, they just swapped hardware
keeping the same cable. These devices need to newer 80 wire ribbon connector.

I would do the following:

Completely disconnect the DVD drive and set that device in the BIOS as 'Not
Installed'. Boot into Windows and ensure it's not present in any device
config (Control Panel, System, Hardware/Device Manager). If it appears
anywhere, manually remove it (not just disable... use 'uninstall this device'
if necessary). Do a complete shutdown of Windows. Re-connect the device,
ensuring that you are using an 80 wire ribbon connector, that the device is
setup in a 'Cable Select' configuration and is connected to the Master end of
the 80 wire ribbon connector. Leave any slave device disconnected for now.
Boot into BIOS and try to auto-detect the DVD device (IDE-1 Master). If it
correctly identifies the device as a DVD, save BIOS and boot into Windows.
Check Explorer and see if it comes up as (example) DVD-RW Drive (D:). Also,
in Control Panel->System->Hardware tab->Device Manager, click the + sign next
to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right click Secondary IDE Channel and select
Properties. Under the Advanced tab, ensure that 'DMA if available' is active
under Device 0 (Master on secondary IDE channel). Most CD/DVD devices are
registered as 'PIO only', but DVD-RW's can use DMA nowadays.

If in the end, none of this brings up a proper device in Explorer, you may
need to do a firmware upgrade/reset to the unit. Check your manufacturers
website for DVD-RW firmware, or do a Google search if it's an OEM device.
