internet explorer loads and runs normally except certain(favorite) sites
load and then explorer crashes to the desktop.
What would cause this anomally?

AOL probably.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

Oh who knows? I've seen IE crash in so many different situations that it's next to impossible to determine the cause.

Can you provide a little more information? Does it ALWAYS crash on some sites? Which ones? If so, then it might be something with
those specific sites that is causing it. If it only crashes sometimes, then it will be almost impossible to determine what the
problem is unless you can notice something that is common to each time it crashes (for example your antivirus is active whenever it
crashes but is disabled when it doesn't, or your mp3 player is plugged in when it crashes and isn't when it doesn't, and so on.)

What happens when it crashes? Does it just close? Does it give an error message?

Do you have any BHOs (browser helper objects)? These are plugins like toolbars and stuff to make IE "better". Very few of them
actually do, and most just make it worse, so you could probably remove any that cause trouble.

I ran a virus scan, restarted a few times and the problem cleared up, hmmm,
a transient bug just passing through I guess, Thanks for your suggestions
they helped me in my course of action.

Transient bugs are the worst, they do not follow any recognizable pattern which makes them incredibly hard to track down and fix.
:(

Glad it's cleared up (for now). :)
