Explorer closing down problem

Hi - I am hoping someone can advise me on this problem. When I am on the internet (and often even when explorer isn't even open!). I get the error message that Explorer has encountered a problem and is going to close down. It closes and sometimes it takes numerous attempts to re open without the error message coming back. I am running Windows XP. I have scanned in every possible way with Norton and all updates are installed and up-to-date! Does anyone else have this problem.
