Explorer Bar Shutting Down For No Reason That I Can Think Of

In the past week and a half or so, when i've gone on to the internet explorer the windows explorer bar found a problem and shut down. Then when I would get back on, the problem wouldn't occur again. I think it may be a virus, but im not sure. Just in case I tried to reinstall internet explorer 6 since that is the only program that would cause the message. To no avail, it did not work. I tried scanning numerous times with Norton, and then Mcafee, but neither found a virus. Im thinking of just reinstalling XP all together, but I really do not want to lose all my personal files (even though I can back them up). Does anyone have any suggestions? Heck, can I reinstall XP and keep my personal files intact? Any help is greatly apprciated, and thanx in advance. (Feel free to email me with any suggestions as well)

Update:

I was able to more or less handle the problem. It was indeed some virus that apperantly Norton or Mcafee did not pick up....but instead the Panda Anti-Virus Program did. The bar only shuts down now if something totally refuses to close when it's not responding.....which is basically what it would always do. Thanx to anyone who was thinking of any suggestions for me.
