Explorer activated

Suddenly, for the last couple days, Internet Explorer, which I don't use,
has started asking, several times a day, to get on the internet.
Fortunately my firewall catches it. Some website tried to run it recently
and I refused it. Could a website change the IE settings?

In ControlPanel -> Automatic Updates I have "Turn off automatic updates"
checked.

How can I stop this tomfoolery? (Long list of expletives deleted.)

Run reliable and UPDATED AV and spyware progs, at least
three of them. Report back.
 
You don't explain why you suspect it is Automatic Updates. Do you know for
sure it is Automatic Updates or do you have an indication it is or is that a
total guess? If you suspect it is Automatic Updates then why do you say
"Some website tried to run it recently and I refused it."? What is "it"? If
you suspect it is Automatic Updates then why do you say "Could a website
change the IE settings?"?

If you want help, then it would help to describe the problem more clearly.

I didn't say I suspected anything. I merely tried to get ahead of someone
telling me I should check automatic updates.

because it happened and was about the same software.

Because I want to know if a website could change the IE settings and cause
the described problem.

I've told you what I've seen. IE suddenly started popping up, wanting on
the internet. If I told you more I'd be making it up.

I'm not sure I understand. What exactly happens? How does it ask? Are
there any particular messages? And if so, please post the exact content.

I don't know how it asks, but my firewall tells me it asks and waits for
me to say whether to let it connect or to deny it. This is standard
procedure for any application that asks to connect to either my network or
the internet unless and until I approve it for always. The exact content?
I don't recall, but they all are reported the same way, so I don't see how
that is relevant. The problem remains. For the last few days IE keeps
trying to get on the internet when I haven't asked to (as it did
continually on Win 98).

As I first said, IE keeps trying to get on the internet. As I first
indicated I'm sick of it.

OK, got the message: "iexplorer.exe is attempting to access the
internet."

No clue. Either that one or something else put a spyware trojan on my
computer. I removed it and no more internet attempts.

Unfortunately I lost the post of the first guy to suggest that, so I can't
thank him specifically.
