Tried online update to Explorer 6.1. Upgrade violated
security policy and now I cannot boot the computer. An
Explorer.exe-applications error window appears and reads:

The instruction at "0x782f3a79" referenced memory
at "0x0000001". The memory could not be "read"

Click OK to terminate the program
Click cancel to debug the program

Neither command works and booting with my Windows Pro CD
in the drive does nothing.

Help?

I had the same problem and fixed it this way:

I have a full copy of IE 6 from my technet subscription so I was able
to copy the contents of the install directory to the computer over the
network. I then pressed ctrl-alt-delete and brought up task manager. I
went to file and new task and typed in the path to the ie6setup.exe
file. It said that it had not finished. I tried to resume but that did
not work. I then tried repeating the install and it took. When the
computer booted back up I could log in.

I don't recall the path that windows update uses for downloading but
you should be able to run ie6setup from there.
