Explore doesn't

Something has happened which keeps the "Explore" function from working
in my machine. I have a Compaq Presario 8000 with AMD Athlon 2000+
processor. When I right click on My Computer or use Windows key + E the
right hand pane just gets the flashlight with the oscillating yellow
light beam. Have I lost a dll or something? If it is a missing file,
which one (what is its name ) and where can I find it on the net? After
I download it where does it go (in what folder does it belong)? Since I
cannot 'explore', I may not be able to put it in the right place. If
not, will it get found by the process that needs it on the desktop?

The problem occurred after I un-installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 and
installed the full Acrobat 6.0. During the un-installation I did not
get the usual message during un-installation about deleting a common dll
and did I want to do it and giving me a chance to select "No to All"
which is why I suspected maybe there was a missing dll. I really am up
a tree here. Surely someone has an idea. Please? Thanks for any help
at all. I have the Home Edition of Windows XP if that is significant.

Some more input: In trying to get it booted successfully with the XP
Home disk in the drive, it told me it could not read the directory
because it could not find ole32.dll and another error message says it
can't find newdev.dll. Can you make anything of that? I would have
thought the XP Disk would have had these on it. Why didn't it just get
them from there?

Ok people, I fumbled my way to a fix. Here's how. On my Lapgtop, I
found ole32.dll. It is not in any folder, just on the C drive. I
copied it onto a CD-RW and moved it onto my Presario and now the
'Explore' function works just fine. The newdev.dll is in the
C:\Windows\system32 folder just where it is supposed to be. I have no
explanation for why it wanted that one and seemingly couldn't find it.

I have seen a lot of other folks having the same exact issue that you and I
have had with Windows Explorer just doing the flashlight search from
HADE(!!!).
I think I have fixed mine by updating ALL of my drivers for all installed
Hardware.
Long story short... after I pulled down a SW driver update for my Canon
Mulitfunction F20 it... Windows Explorer works like its old self again.
I figured that it was a Driver or something since Windows is fussy with
Driver.
Hope this helps someone else.
