I've posted before complaining about SP1. It was offered to my dad in
Windows Update, (he has Vista Basic) but each time he installed it, a
message would come saying it failed. he tried it 3 times. It was also I
think he said, about a 65 meg download. (it said 62 to 432 megs, but it was
65 he said)
I then read a few posts where Carey Frisch was telling people to install the
SP1 standalone from Microsoft downloads. I eventually told him to try it.
Guess what??? It worked! He said it was 432 meg download instead of the 65,
but it was successful. Now I wonder why? First, why was it successful, when
it wasn't from the Windows Update, and second, why was the download so many
megs?

The standalone version of SP1 includes files for
five different language versions of Vista....that is
why its a larger file then the one offered from
Windows Update. Its hard to explain why the
Windows Update version failed to installed
without analyzing a log that was generated on
your computer. The only folks really capable
of analyzing such a detailed log are the SP1 support
specialists that work for Microsoft technical support.

Thanks you for letting us know that you have successfully installed
SP1 using the standalone version!

Using the update method SP1 is suppose to be selective and skip over
things you already have or don't need. Downloading the huge standalone
version SP1 uses the kitchen sink approach. During install (after
you've downloaded the bloated monster) it skips over stuff it don't
need or is suppose to.

Ontop of the replies given, sometimes if the internet connection is not fast
enough, the servers can time out I've noticed for normal web installs rather
then just downloading the whole program.
