Hello.

Windows XP Pro, SP2, IE 6.0 Mcafee Security Suite with all latest
windows/office/software updates, service packs and patches.

Whenever i try to do anything involving internet, i get these long
pauses(about a minute or two) between web sites or internet activity.

I tried most of the malware/virus fixes suggested in this forum.

I have this one program called Magic Mail Monitor. It shows me what my
emails are on the mail servers. When i start it, it takes an inordinate
amount of time to get all of the emails. It spends a lot of time saying
"Sending TOP Request". It takes a good 2 to 4 minutes for it to get all of
the emails.

I have MMM running on other computers on the same network and when i start
it, BAM! the emails popup instantly. That leads me to believe that it is
something with just this one computer.

It really makes me mad because this computer has the fastest megahertz
rating of all the computers on our network and it's the newest. It should
be fast. It doesn't seem to have that problem when running local software.

Does anybody have any idea of what i can do to eliminate those long pauses?
I tried just about everything.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

I had the same problem with a computer I had that had 2 NICs. I was only
using one but the other was active and just not plugged in.
The computer will look at both connections when an Internet request is made,
usually the disconnected NIC then the connected NIC. If this computer has 2
active NICs disable the one you are not using - reboot and test.

How do you connect? Is there a router involved?

Are you sure you don't have the Windows Firewall as well as the McAfee
firewall enabled? If you disable the McAfee firewall and enable the Windows
Firewall, does the behavior persist?

If you boot into Safe Mode with Networking, does the behavior persist?

Hello Danny.

I only have one nic in my computer. I looked at my network connections and
there are two entries with a status of connected. One of them is my LAN and
the other says unrecognized connection. Should that be there? I don't know
what it is.

Could that be causing my problem?

Thanks,
Tony

Hello Bear.

This computer is sometimes connected directly to the Verizon FIOS router and
sometimes it is connected to the switch behind a Server 2003 and a Zywall 10
appliance and these pieces go through the same Verizon FIOS router.

I checked the Windows firewall. It is OFF. Iwill try your other
suggestions and let you know.

Thanks,
Tony

2 entries with the status of connected sounds like the computer thinks it is
connected to 2 networks. Try disabling the "Unrecognized" connection, reboot
and test.

It does the same thing no matter how i connect to the internet.

Thanks,

After disabling that connection and rebooting, i had not internet. Enabling
that connection restablished my internet.

I then reconnected the pc to the server's switch. The unrecognized
connection dissappeared, but i still have internet.

Either way, it still does the same pauses.

I think that unrecognized connection has something to do with the Verizon
FIOS router.

Thanks,
Tony

Hello Bear.

I never did try booting into safe mode with networking, because i
uninstalled Mcafee and this computer flies through everything including the
internet.

I hate the Mcafee software. I've always had problems using it and
uninstalling it. I only use it becuase it is free.

Can you recommend an alternative that does not interfere with your computer
and cuase it to slow down?

Thanks for your recommendation. Mcafee was the problem. Idiots!

Thanks,
Tony

Not the expert Bear is but I switched from McAfee for the same reason.
Google Avast. Its a free program I am running which was recommended here.

Avast! is free for home use (www.avast.com). Do a custom install and don't
install email scanning.
