I have outlook 2003 and I have created a DL in CONTACTS.
I create a new mail message and put the DL in the TO line.
There is no plus sign in front of the DL so I cannot
expand the DL to the names. I found a MS article 831398
that talks about a registry entry PONT_STRING. There is
not such registry entry anywhere in the registry. I even
tried entering it with the default value specified and I
still do not get the plus sign in front of the DL. I
have looked high and low for options that might be
suppressing it but have not found anything.

Thanks, Marge

If you create a new DL in Outlook 2003, does it work correctly?

The DL I was trying to expand was created in outlook 2003.
I tried another DL also created in Outlook 2003 and had
the same problem. Is there a setting somewhere or a
problem with the fonts?

BTW I had trouble finding this post and I sent in another
request on this issue today.

I replaced Outlook XP with Outlook 2003 so it was not a
clean install.
Under Outlook Data files I see the following 2 items:
C:\mail_pst\Personal Folders(1).pst
Format is: Personal Folders File(97-2002)
C:\mail_pst\outlook.pst
same format

That's an odd name for a PST file. You must have done something unusual to
create it somewhere along the line.
First thing I'd do is try to repair your PST with the Inbox Repair Tool.
If that doesn't work, as a long shot, I'd try creating a PST in the new
format, create a DL there and see if it works correctly.

I compacted and repaired the pst files. I still did not
get the plus sign. I created a pst in the new format and
still did not get the plus sign. Do I need to close the
folders in the older format before I create the DL under
the new format?

I have no idea.
Your problem is inexplicable. I've never seen it.
