I have a program which requires windows to be shut down
and only having MS-DOS running to run the application. I
cannot find any means of shutting down WindowsXP to MS-
DOS mode. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Windows XP does not have an option to boot to MS-DOS
because it is not based on the old MS-DOS platform.

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter to get the
Command Prompt for the MS-DOS emulator.

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: OLDER PROGRAMS , and hit enter.

The way I usually do it, is that I put in my Windows XP cd rom, then
restart, and make sure the bios is set to boot from the cd rom drive before
the harddrive, and then the startup cd lets me use the "Windows repair
console"... then I have dos up and running...

I can get as far as restarting the computer on the XP cd,
however I saw nothing of "Windows repair console". any
help with that?

Impossible to do because XP is DOS-free. the prompt that
is "dos" on XP is just an emulator that can only run in a
windows enviornment. you could try installing dos but
don't know if it will work

Actually it's called "Recovery Console." Boot with the XP CD and press R on
your keyboard at the first screen that gives you the choice to install XP or
start Recovery Console. You'll have to indicate which installation of XP the
Recovery Console should address (there's usually only one showing, of course)
and it will ask for your Administrator password. If none, leave it blank.

Recovery Console supports only limited commands. For a list of them, go to
Start > Help and Support and search for recovery console. Click on "Recovery
Console commands."

One thing I forgot to mention: that's not really DOS. If you want DOS, you'll
have to use something like a Win9x startup disk. Of course, it can't read any
partition that's formatted NTFS. Recovery Console can.

Greetings --

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit
graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation,
has never used or included MS-DOS. The closest they have is the
Command Prompt window.

WinXP, like its predecessors WinNT & Win2K, is a pure 32-bit GUI
OS, and does not include or "ride upon" any version of DOS, as did
Win3.x & Win9x/Me. WinXP does include a command-line emulator for
those times when GUI applets are unnecessary/redundant, but it cannot
be started in "DOS mode."

XP does not come with any real mode DOS and the only way to have that is
to boot an alternate - eg a Win98 startup floppy. Note that if you need
hard disk with that you will need to have a FAT 32 partition around

You don't. You have a basic Windows XP, in a non-GUI mode. It looks
like a DOS prompt but very definitely is *not* DOS. Nor is the 'Safe
Mode Command Prompt'
