I am running windows XP and when I bring the computer out
of standby it reboots as though I had turned it off.
Anybody any idea why this should be happening and what I
can do to solve the problem?

Many thanks

Brian

Thank you for reply. Unfortunately that is not the
problem. The problem is when I put the computer into
standby and wake it up again, it then goes through the
whole boot up process instead of just returning to where
I had left off. Any advice would be really appreciated.

What is the auto-restart option and how do I disable it?

This is described in the mentioned article and can help finding out
the cause of the problem.
"This behavior may occur if Windows throws a fatal error during a
typical operation or during the shutdown process. By default, the
computer is configured to automatically restart during a fatal error.
To view this setting, right-click My Computer, click the Advanced tab,
click Settings under Startup and Recovery, and then view the
Automatically restart check box under System Failure. If the
Automatically restart check box is selected, Windows automatically
restarts if the computer stops unexpectedly. "
Disable this option and see if you get an error message now.

OK tried that, then entered standby, but made no
difference - still rebooted from scratch and no error
report. Any other ideas?

Many thanks.

Check the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer as well
for informations. If you cannot find anything here you may want to ask
the manufacturer of the computer for help. It seems like if there is
something not compatible with the Energy-saving options of Windows.
