I have a number of EXE files which I have downloaded and
every time I try to open them either noting happens or I
get the dos prompt for a few seconds and then the screen
just goes back to normal. Is their a different way to
open these files or are they all corrupt as I have quite
a few of them and would like to be able to open them and
use them?

It sounds like you are using start/run. Try using a
command prompt window. start/accessories/command prompt.
Then the results of executing the files should remain
visible until you type 'exit' to kill the window.

Sounds like these may be DOS based utilities or similar that are
running and exiting.

What are the names of some of the files?

Try opening a DOS command prompt window (Accessories - Command
Prompt), navigating to the folder where the files are stored, and then
running them from the command line.

Good luck
