Has anyone ever had problems trying to run their
executables. I am running Windows XP Home edition. My
McAffee found a virus which I deleted and now when I
click on any of my executables I get the error "Windows
cannot find 'C:\Program Files\etc. etc' (etc being the
path and executable file name). the funny thing is I can
open a file which is associated to an executable and it
will open??? e.g. If I double click on a *.ppt file the
power point will open, but if I double click on
powerpoint itself, I get the error. Also the shortcuts on
my desktop work fine but anything in my taskbar
under 'START' 'ALL PROGRAMS' give me the error. Any help
or direction on where to look would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi,

Your .exe file association is mungedd, but it's easy to fix. Copy
exe_fix.reg from ftp://12.107.147.141/regfiles to your system and
double-click it. Allow it to merge with your registry, it will reset the
defaults. The effect should be immediate.

Thanks for the replies... I tried to download the WinXP
EXE fix but I'm getting the error that registry editing
has been disabled by the administrator. System will not
allow me to get into the user accounts to change because
rundll32.exe won't run. I'll try repeating while in safe
mode but if you have any other suggestion, it would be
approeciated.

Thanks again.

See www.dougknox.com, Security, Disable/Enable Registry Editing Tools. Download and run this small VB Script. If the first time its run it says the tools are disabled, run it again. Then import the REG file you downloaded earlier for the EXE problem.

I am having the same problem when I try to add software since upgrading to
XP Pro. I get the message "cannot find D:\setup.exe.

I tried the fix from Venkatesh but that didn't help.
