Boy oh boy do I feel stupid. I wanted to see what was in the code for a
program file and so I opened it in Notepad. Unfortunately, the box for "Open
all files of this type" was clicked, and so now all my Windows .exe (or most
of them--I can still use IE) won't work. Not even System Restore!

This is exacerbated by the fact that I am using Windows Tablet, so I am not
at all sure

Can anyone tell me how I can undo what I have done?

Download the EXE File Association Fix from this web site and see if it helps.

Hi, thanks so much for the suggestion. It looks like everything worked
importing-wise, but I still get the same problem. I will try rebooting and
see how that works.

Thanks again, I will let you know.

Hi again,
Unfortunately that didn't do it. I was able to get into regedit.ext using
your trick with taskmaster, and as I said, it looked as if everything that
was supposed to import was accepted, but no change.

Thanks again.

If I could just get System Restore to work, I think I could fix this. Do you
by any chance have suggestions about how to do that?

Thank you so much..

Go to Start -> Run and enter the following in the Open box.

Command.com

Click OK.

This should open up a command prompt window.
Enter the following commands hitting the Enter key at the end of each line.

CD C:\Windows\System32\Restore
Copy rstrui.exe rstrui.com
Rstrui.com

Hopefully, that will launch System Restore.

If that doesn't work, take a look at these two web sites. Maybe the
exefix_xp.com file will help fix you problem.

If you're still not getting anywhere with this problem, you might consider
running a repair installation of XP.

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Keep in mind that while a repair install should preserve your installed programs
and data files you should always back up any files you can't afford to lose just
in case something goes wrong. You can also expect to have to reinstall any
updates/service packs that have been released since the version of XP on your
installation CD was released.

Good luck
