Yesterday I installed a video edition demo (Ulead Video
Studio) and upon reboot of my laptop, all exe and link
files could no longer be opened. Somehow this corrupted
something and now only Explorer works.

NO exe files work at all yet XP opens up totally normally.

I had also installted the Ulead software on my Desktop
and all was normal...

Any idea what this could be?

Thanks

Have you scanned for viruses?

I would be surprised to have viruses since my NAV is
automatically updated.

I don't do much with the laptop - not active with email,
nor really on the web(second computer).

Also, right now, cannot execute any exe so cannot scan.

May have to do with System 32.exe. SOmething at the boot
does not provide all the info to the system.

If you are 100% certain you don't have the Sircam virus, then you might try
the following:

start -> settings -> folder options -> view tab. untick hide file extentions
for known file types and hit ok. then hit start -> find -> files or folders.
in the named field, enter regedit.exe and hit find now. when it finds the
file, right-click -> rename, and change the name to regedit.com, then
double-click the file to run it. this is the windows registry editor and it
works a bit like windows explorer. in the left pane, expand:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
in the right pane, double click (Default) and enter:

"%1" %*
that is, type the following characters:
quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk. hit ok, touch nothing else,
close the registry editor, rename regedit.com to regedit.exe, and try to run
a program. a reboot may be needed, but probably not.

(Thanks to original poster for this fix...)

When changing to regedit.com, Windows won't let me open
the regedit.exe file (or .com after changing names))(it's
still looking to assiociate this file to aprogram to
open). ONly Exploer and my email program work.
