Exchange Mailboxes Not Refreshing

Have a customer using SBS 4.5 with Exchange 5.5 SP4 and
they have a problem that messages are not appearing in
their Inbox and outgoing messages are staying in Outbox
until you view another folder within the mailbox, once
you do this unread messages appear in Inbox and any
outgoing messages go to Sent Items etc. If you call a
request to Exchange in any way (ie. changing folder) it
then refreshes screen. This is happening for all mail
(internal and external) on every workstation.
Workstations are running Outlook 2000.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards
Debbie

This generally means that there is something between the end users and the
server that is blocking UDP datagrams. These data packets travel on a
random port > 1023. This UDP notification port cannot be locked to any
given port number.

The "something" to look for is...

* Personal/Desktop firewall software
* Switch/Router/Corporate firewall

Thanks for your reply. If it was blocking the UDP why
when they change view does it refresh? is this using a
specific port? There is a second nic in the server for
ADSL, which is connected to a netgear router. The client
installed this and to be fair has been since this
install. But disabling this second card the fault is
still there. They have no personal firewall software
installed on the client pc's, with proxy server running
(sbs 4.5) and this hasn't been changed.

When a user changes a folder, it triggers Outlook to poll the server rather
than wait on event notification. Unfortunately the bad thing about UDP
notifications from Exchange to the client is that they are not on a specific
port. It is always a random port above 1023.

Since the server has 2 network cards, there is a possibility that the
notification is going out the wrong interface. Rather than mess with the
network settings on the server, I would suggest
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304849 to your
customer.

Thanks for the reply, in looking at the Microsoft
document you mention it also mentions Doc No: 311506, in
applying SP3 for Office 2000 and doing the registry keys
detailed in doc it has curred problem.

Thanks again for assistance.
