Exchange as default mail client

I'm trying to do a mail-merge from Word. When I try to send the merge to
e-mail, I get an "unspecified error," telling me that I must log on to
Microsoft Exchange as my default mail client. I can't even open the control
panel "Mail" options icon. It tells me to close windows, that I don't have
sufficient memory or system resources. I have 2 Gig of RAM and no trouble
opening up any or all other control panel option icons, or even multiple ones
at once. I am sure that I have plenty of resources and memory. So what's
going on here?

Log off and then log in again while holding down the Shift key, keeping the
key held down until your desktop is stable and the cursor no longer shows
the hourglass. Then see if you can open the Mail applet in Control Panel.

OK, I was able to go into the control panel and set up the service, but now,
if I try to send a word document to a mail recipient from the file menu in
Word, I get an exception error and the process fails. I can open Outlook and
send emails, but I can't use the email merge feature from Word. I get the
same exception error thingy.

Word and Outlook are the same version, correct?

Affirmative: Word is 11.6568.6568 SP2; Outlook is 11.6568.6568 SP2; both part
of Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003.

Have you tried Help>Detect and Repair yet?
