Excessive printer delay to print a document

I have several printers on my XP system. WHen I try to
print more than one document on the printers that are not
the default printer, there is a four to six minute delay
after the first document prints. The first document
always prints out quickly as it should but subsequent
documents are delayed the 4 to 6 miuntes. I've tried
changing the setting on the spooler but nothing seems to
work. It's almost as if there is some sort of system
priority delay. Any suggestions?

To make sure i understand the scenario:
You open notepad, type some stuff, File->print to your DJ500 printer (which
is not the default), then file_print again. The first doc will print
immediatly, the second doc takes 4-6 minutes to be output.
If you do the same test on your default printer, you do not expeirence the
delay

What does the Printer folder show during the 6 minute delay? What is the
status of the job. Is the printer bidirectional? Are you using XP drivers,
or OEM?

In answer to your questions in your first paragraph:

"You open notepad, type some stuff, File->print to your
DJ500 printer (which
is not the default), then file_print again. The first doc
will print
immediatly, the second doc takes 4-6 minutes to be
output.

delay"

The answer is that the description of the problem is
correct except that the printer I am testing is an HP
970CXI.

As for the second paragraph............

"What does the Printer folder show during the 6 minute
delay? What is the
status of the job. Is the printer bidirectional? Are you
using XP drivers,
or OEM?"

- What happens in the first six minutes is an icon shows
up in the systray and when it is opened it shows the
print queue whith a BLANK for the status. The printer is
not set for bidirectional and when I turn off the spooler
and try printing directly to the printer the printer PC
is locked because the print job is hung up.
- I've tried using the existing XP driver that comes with
XP and an updated driver from HP for XP with the same
delayed results.

I hope this is helpful.

Hmm, i should have asked this in my first post. You say that there are
several printers on your machine. How are they connected to your XP box? Do
you have multiple LPT ports? an LPT switchbox? Mapped network printers?
What kind of machine is on the backend? How are the ports configured in the
spooler?

This one has me scratching my head. Theres something about your
configuration im not asking that is a keystone to your issue.. I've only
seen this issue once before, and it was a problem with a 3rd party network
provider. Anything else unique to your config you think might involve your
printers?
