Whenever I do the simplest of task such as search for a file my hard drive
spindles up a acceleration brings the noise to a very high level I am
running XP on a Compaq Presario 1.7ghz ,80gb HD and 512 mb I have done
everything from changing the VM, installing the latest Intel application
accelerator I don't what else to do. I have already replaced the original
HD, I guess it just wore out due to constant access.

How can I tell without opening the box, and would the fan increase in speed,
I thought they only ran at one speed because the noise continues to increase
until I stop whatever application is hoggong the memory/CPU

Boy, is that a good question. Even with the case open, it's often difficult
to determine exactly where a sound comes from. It's basically a
trial-and-error operation. I've read about people using a stethoscope to
hunt for a sound's origin.

Sometimes noise comes from surprising places. For example, Dell computers
(and perhaps others) of recent vintage have a plastic shroud that
concentrates airflow over the CPU. A poster to a Dell newsgroup discovered
recently that the shroud in his computer was vibrating, and that became a
buzzing noise.

To answer your other question: Many power supply fans in contemporary
computers will spin faster or slower based upon the temperature inside the
case.
