I have XP, IE6, and use Avant browser also. Whenever I open a browser (I
have tried several) my cpu usage soon shoots to the max and hangs my pc.
Offline there are no such problems (or with Outlook Express).

I need feedback in order to figure this out and solve it. TIA.

Avant *uses* the same engine as IE6 - leading one to believe something is
wrong with your Internet Explorer.

My suggestion - fix Internet Explorer.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows XP

After fixing IE - download and install the latest Avant Browser:
Avant Browser 11.7 Build 18
(Released November 1, 2008.)

You also may want to try FireFox as a true alternative browser.

What are your anti-virus and and anti-spyware arranegements? What
firewall?

What is the CPU speed?

How much RAM?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

Hope this helps.

I seem to recall that this problem has been associated with some versions of
specific add-ons, such as Flash.
