Excell Version 7.0 (1985-1995)

So I've been quite content using this old version of Excel
for some time.
Now someone has sent me an .xls file that I can't open
because my version is too old.
I really don't want to spend $500 in software just to open
this file.
Is Excel 2000 still for sale?
Or... What do I do?

You can download a free Excel viewer from Microsoft. The
viewer lets you open and print a spreadsheet, but no edits
are posible. Try this URL for the Excel 97/2000 compatible
viewer:

By the way, I haven't tried this for a while so I'm not
sure, but if you already have an older version of Excel
installed the viewer may associate itself as the default
application for Excel files instead of your existing
version. If this, or other problems occur upon installing
the viewer you can re-install the old version and both
versions should get along ok.

Depending on what's in this file, if you have a fast internet connection you
could download OpenOffice, load the new XLS file and save as an Excel 95 XLS
file. You'll lose VBA modules, possibly some formatting, maybe a few other
things, but most formatting and formulas should remain intact.

As for Office 2000, it may still be available on eBay or other auction sites.

If the person who has the file can resend it in the correct format you should be
ok

Otherwise -- look for Office97 -- you should be able to find copies on Ebay or
elsewhere fairly cheap and 97 is compatable with XP and 2003
