Excell overload

I rountinely create large (>8mB) Excel workbooks to manage
my business and tax affairs. I have one now that seems to
be too large (10.9mB, 19 tabs) for Excel to handle
efficiently. It takes 5-10 seconds to perform each
calculation (I know I could turn off auto calc); BUT most
alarming, any changes made in one worksheet do not flow
through to other sheets or to charts. I have to close
Excel and reopen to have any changes appear on charts
(which then become frozen until the next time I close and
reopen the workbook). This is a major pain.

I have upgraded my DELL Latitude C800 notebook to 256mB
memory thinking that might resolve the problem, but it
hasn't. I have Windows 2000, SerPac3, and am running
Excel 2000. Can this problem (especially the chart
freezing) be fixed?

It may be that your perception is wrong. I have noticed that pressing
a key in large workbooks (XL97) can interrupt the calculation process
("Calculate" appears in the status bar). Perhaps if you don't worry
about calculation until you have finished entering data, or leave
Excel alone long enough (until the status bar shows nothing) it will
complete. Yep, I feel the pain too.
