Why is it that i cannot open an excel file in my windows
xp. ex. my co. sends me a spreadsheet in my windows xp. I
cannot open it. it is directing me to microsoft to
download excel. it seems i and the reciepient cannot open
a spreadsheet using my windows xp. what i do is copy it
to word then copy it to excel. why?

To open an Excel file, you need to have Excel installed on your system.
Windows by itself cannot open an Excel file.

My take on this is slightly different......

OP states "I copy it to Word then copy it to Excel". I assume this means OP
has Word and Excel on computer.

Maybe try the re-register route?

Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes and note the space before the /
mark).

Then re-register by Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver

You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case surround
with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\to Excel\somewhere\excel.exe" /unregserver

Good point, Gord ... I obviously didn't read it as closely as I should have!

Hey, that means I didn't read it as closely as I should have, too!

And that's never happened to me before <vvbg>.

Sad part is, we may never know what "take" is close.
