I am trying to save a modified excel sheet as a Office 2K version (that is
what the client is using) but I get a "Document Not Saved" error with no
help available.

Does anyone have a clue as to how to save it as an older version?

Excel XP and 2000, as well as 97, use the same file format.

Maybe the same basic format, but there were some VBA features that 97 didn't
support that 2K did (that was the reason I had to upgrade).

XP has a option under "Save As ..." for Excel 97, Excel 2K. There would be
no reason for this if they were exactly the same. I also saw a short help
file that told how to same *.xls's with both formats for companies that
still used both versions.

True, features vary, but file format doesn't.

I think you're thinking of the XL97-2002,XL5/95 format which saves
the workbook twice - once in 97-2002 format and once in 95 format -
in the same file. This is offered as a compatiblity mode, but that
should only be necessary when sharing w/XL95 users. XL97 reads XL02
files just fine - it simply ignores the newer parts that it doesn't
understand.

Using dual mode normally just takes up room on your hard drive.
Unless you have a specific need, don't use it.
