Excel wrap text problem

Ellen Kemper

I am having a problem where we have a lot of text in a
cell. I have the wrap text option turned on and have
made the row quite tall. Some of the text is not
displaying. There is plenty of white space at the bottom
of the row for the text to display, but it does not. If
you widen the column, the text will display. However, we
don't want the column wider, we want the row taller and
to have all of the text display properly. We were able
to add hard returns [ALT+ENTER]to manually break the
lines at certain spots and have it display, but that
seems so manual. Any ideas?

Hi Ellen,
the specification limit in HELP
32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a cell; all 32,767 display in the formula bar.
 
Thanks for your reply David! I saw those specifications
in help too. My question then is, why does it all
display if I widen the column, but it can't display with
a taller row?

Are you within specifications and do you really see all of the text
if you widen the row.

No, I am beyond the specifications (my last test was
1,113 characters not counting spaces and 1418 if you do
count spaces) but still when you widen the column, you
see it all. Also, if you use [ALT+ENTER] to place hard
returns in the midst of the text, you can force it to
wrap down to more lines, although obviously this is a
very manual process. When you cut back to 1024
characters, it will all wrap correctly as long as the
column is wide enough that you don't break the 409 point
row height specification. I guess the conclusion to come
to is that it will act unpredictably if you go above the
specifications.
