Hi Dave,
If you do have Excel 2002 you can color tabs through the
Format menu, point to Sheet, and then click Tab Color. You can also
right-click the sheet tab and then click Tab Color You can group sheets
to color several sheet tabs the same color at one tme. Don't forget to
ungroup sheets by right click on sheettabs then ungroup sheets, when
finished or risk severe damage.
There are other techniques that you can use even if you don't have Excel 2002.
The main thing is to be able to find the sheet by it's name. In fact I can't imagine
how color worksheet tabs is going to be real useful. Other than impressing
someone in Lotus Notes, they didn't make any real difference.
1) name the worksheet tab with a meaningful but shortname.
2) sort the worksheet tabs with a macro
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/buildtoc.htm#sortallsheets
you can add a prefix to the names to make them sort into categories
k.FunctionKeys, k.Shortcutkeys
3) You can right click on the sheet navigation arrows to the left of the
sheet tabs for a list of sheets, if you see "More Sheets" look at
that list. You can use a macro to bring up the "More Sheets" directly.

4) You can build a Table of Contents with additional information

Or if you just want the sheetname, see
