Hello

I have an Excel Workbook that has been sent to me by
email. At the moment it only has column headings on 10
different worksheets with no data as yet. For some reason
it is showing as being 5Mb but has no data! The only
thing that looks out of place is that a couple of the
worksheets seem to have 25000 rows active. This makes the
scroll bar very small.
Could this be what is making the workbook very large?
If so, is there any way of 'dis-activating' these
rows/cells?

Thanks

Yes. This is a common cause of overly-big files.

The 'last used cell' on a worksheet is dependent on the last column and last
row in which any cell contains anything - data, formula, or even just
formatting. For example, if the only such 'things' in a sheet were in C1 and
A10, the last used cell would be C10. You can go to the last used cell using
CTRL+END.

If you are sure that there should be nothing beyond the first few
rows/columns (see * below), you can do one of two things.
Either:
Create a new worksheet and just copy into it those few cells, and then
delete the original worksheet.
Or:
Select all rows below those really used at least as far as the last used
cell and delete them using delete on an edit menu, NOT the delete key on the
keyboard (that only clears cell contents rather than deleting cells). Then
do the same for columns to the right of those really used. Then save the
file, and the file size should be much smaller.

* You must, of course, be sure that you are not deleting anything that is
required. You might want to investigate first by using Edit > Go To >
Special ..., so that you can highlight and look at specific cells that might
contain data, formulas, etc.
