I have just installed XP and was assured that I didn't
need to save my files/folders to disk. Since loading XP
all those files and folders seem to have disappeared.

Help...

Where do I look? Will I ever get them back?

Have you done a search with advanced option (to search in system areas and
look for hidden files) for your files yet?
Did you UPGRADE or Boot with the CD and INSTALL?

Alycia,

If you did a "clean install" by re-formatting your HDD, then indeed your
personal files and folders are all gone! ALWAYS best to backup your personal
files to CD or other removable media prior to any major system changes. . .
cheap insurance.

If the above is not the case, do a system search for *.doc and *.xls and you
will find where the files are located. You can then move them to the new My
Documents folder where Office will be able to find them.

You did install Office didn't you? Office is a totally separate retail
product from the OS, so WinXP does NOT contain Word or Excel and thus can't
"access these files".

What sort of installation of XP did you do? There is "upgrade", "New",
and "clean"? Which did you pick? It should have ben "upgrade", but the
symptoms you report suggest you did "new" or "clean".

If you did "upgrade" and upgrading from Win 9x, it should have created
an account for the user name under which you upgraded. Look for another
ID under which those files might have moved to. Also do a search for
the files (*.doc, *.xls, etc.).

Whoever "Assured" you that you didn't need to save your files was ana
idiot. You should alwasy have backups. Especially when making major
changers to your system. Even thought the files shouldn't be affected,
Many things can go wrong such as a power failure or spike during a
critical time. Nothing is 100% safe.
