Doesn't matter if I'm trying to just open excel, or an
existing excel document, excel is freezing before blank or
existing document opens. I suspect that the default file
or settings that are loaded when excel opens is corrupt,
but I don't know what to delete to remove. I've tried
uninstalling and reinstalling excel, but the problem
continues. any ideas?

Hi Curt,

This isn't guaranteed to solve the problem, but it's worth a try. Use
Windows Explorer to search all of your hard disks for files with a .XLB
extension. Delete any that you find. Excel uses these file to store
information about its toolbar configuration, but they commonly become
corrupted and cause strange things like this to happen. Excel will recreate
clean new default versions after you delete the old corrupt ones.

If you are running Windows 2000/NT4.0 SP6 w/ Office 2000
loaded, try this:

I suggest that we first restore Excel to its default
settings. This way, we will be able to know whether the
issue is caused by some customized settings. To do this,
please follow the steps below:

1. Clear up all files in the following folders
=================================

- C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Xlstart
- C:\Winnt\Profiles\<User name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\Xlstart
where <User name> is your login user name.
- The folder specified in the Alternate startup file
location box on the General tab of the Options dialog box
in Excel (on the Tools menu, click Options).

Note: If a macro virus infects Excel, the macro virus is
usually located in these folders.

2. Find all the .xlb files and rename them
==================================

a) Click Start| Find | Files or Folders.
b) In the Named text box input "*.xlb" (without the
quotation marks).
c) Select Local Hard drives in the Look in drop down box;
Check Include subfolders.
d) Click Find now.
e) When finding the xlb files please right click these
files and select Rename in the popup menu.
f) Input a new name. For example: rename Excel.xlb to
Excel.old.

3. Disable all the installed add-ins
============================

a) Start Excel in Safe Mode.
b) In the Tools menu, select Add-Ins.
c) Uncheck all the checked add-ins in the Add-ins
available list box.
d) Click OK.

4. Recreate Excel Registry Key
========================

Note: The following steps contain information about
modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry,
make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand
how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For
information about how to back up, restore, and edit the
registry, click the following article number to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

256986: Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
Web Add: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=KB;EN-US;256986

Please remove the Excel key from Registry:

a) Click on Start button and then Run menu.
b) Type "Regedit" in the open box, and click OK.
c) Click the (+) beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
d) Click the (+) beside Software.
e) Click the (+) beside Microsoft.
f) Click the (+) beside Office.
g) Click the (+) beside 9.0.
h) Highlight the Excel folder and right-click on it,
select Delete from the popup menu.
i) Click Yes.
j) Restart Excel. Then, a new key will be generated.

This will restore the default setting of Excel.

.
Absolutely awesome solution! Worked for me. The file was
dated the same time that I began having problems.
Question for Bill(Microsoft). Why isn't this file deleted
when repairing, uninstalling or reinstalling Office 2000.
It seems that the problem remains while being known to
MS.>?
