can not access files from my station. Re-Installed Office
XP, Windows XP, new User & Password, new permission and
STILL get the same error "unable to read file". I am able
to access same files from different stations !. What is
going on?

Are you using Norton AV?

I have seen previous discussions on Norton AV conflicting
with Word, Excel, PP. Somethingabout disabling add-ins.

I had similar problem: uninstalled Norton, uninstalled
Office, reboot, reinstall install office.

Try KB329820

I tried 329820 article ID was selected, but no documents
were available. It sent me to the support page.
I had the problem twice. I "fixed" it by removing office
and removing \program files\msoffice. I may have removed
excel from the registry file. I don't remember.
So I reinstalled office.

I have some macros that I run periodically and sometimes
they open other xl files. I had a hanging tool bar (the
kind with an "x" (close program) on an open xl (call
it "B"). Well I closed B without closing the toolbar and
had a ghost toolbar on A. I tried to add the same
toolbar in A and then close it. No dice. It was on all
sheets too. So I closed A without saving it, and reopened
A. That when i got the error msg.
I get the message twice and on the third time i the file
opens. I doesn't matter if I open a fresh file or an old
file.
I read the thing about the AV, so I went back and removed
Norton AV, rebooted and tried to open a file. Same
problem.
It seems to me that removing the AV program would fix it
if it were the add-in that was causing the AV program to
hang.

Hi Steve,

Try searching your hard disk for all files with a .xlb extension. These
are the files that Excel uses to store toolbar information and they often
become corrupted, which can result in strange problems like this. Delete all
the .xlb files you find and see if that doesn't help. Note that this will
cause you to lose any toolbar customization that you've made in Excel.
