Excel Start up problem

When I start Excel, a certain number of files start automatically. There are
no files listed in the auto start up in the options menu and the two
autostart locations (XLSTART in Application data and XLSTART in Microsoft
office\OFFICE 11) are also empty. The only way to run Excel is in safe mode,
but that means losing all the funcionality of the application. Can anyone
help?

Hi Simon,

It sounds as if you have an alternate startup directory specified under
the Tools/Options/General menu. In Excel 2003 this setting is called "at
startup, open all files in". You will have to get Excel open normally in
order to modify this setting. If that isn't possible, you can remove it from
the registry by deleting the registry entry named "AltStartup" located under
the following the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options

If you do not see an AltStartup entry under this key then you have a
different problem, but I'm betting this is it.
