Excel slow starting

I have XP SP2, and Excel 2000 SP3.
With AntiSpyware Real-time protection on, when I click on
an Excel file it takes about 7 seconds to open. With all 3
security agents turned off it takes about 1 second.
Is there something I can disable so that it does not
interfere with Excel loading ?
(Just to clarify, I am clicking on an Excel file in
MyDocuments folder. Excel is not opened first. If I open
Excel first, then files load do load quickly.)

Is there more than one real-time-scanner observing this action--for example,
do you have real-time scanning from your antivirus application at the same
time?

I'm not implying that both shouldn't be happening at the same time, but it
would be of interest to see whether disabling the antivirus as a test made a
difference--and if it does, knowing the product and version involved--so
further testing can be done.

(this may be totally off the mark--so if this is a difficult experiment to
make don't worry about it!)

I have Norton Internet Security 2005 running. If I disable
the antivirus and firewall there is no effect on the slow
start for Excel.
Also have Spyware Blaster - also no effect on the slow
start if I disable it.
