excel not responding

Each time I try to open Excel (or an excel file), the program fails to
completely open. If opening Excel, I see the list of files to recover, but
the hourglass continues to run ultimately showing (not responding). If I try
to open a specific excel file, the bottom left of the screen shows "Opening
(file)" but no status/progress bars show.

The error report showed:
szAppName : EXCEL.EXE szAppVer : 10.0.6501.0 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

Please help me to learn how I can get Excel to work again. I tried closing
the program and starting over, as well as restarting the computer (a couple
of times).
