excel not accepting formula

I sent out a workbook and when it returned I found that when I enter a formula in a cell nothing happened. It is though all I was doing was typing in text. Example: select Cell B4, click on the = in the command line, click on cell C7, cell B4 now reads "=(C7)" and the result preview in the wizard had a four (the value in cell C7)

What am I missing?!

Thanks for your assistance
Perplexed

Hi
probably the cell is formated as Text. Try the following:
- select the cell
- goto 'Format - Cells'
- set the format to 'General'
- re-enter the formula

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried it. However, same result. I also tried changing the format to number but the sample did not show decimal places and when I tried to autosum the result was 0

Still Perplexed

Hi
have you tried to re-enter the formula after changing the format?
If yes try also the following:
- goto 'Tools - Options - View'
- uncheck 'Formulas'

Thanks Frank
I had to clear content on all the cells in the row and then re-format. Now the row accepts the formula and displays the proper result

Appreciatively
No longer perplexed
