Excel locked me out of a workbook

I was working on a spreadsheet in a workbook when I
realized one field with a numeric value would not sort
properly. The value was 1002 and when I would sort it with
the rest of the worksheet, it would always move to the top
ahead of 1001. I use this as a database file in access and
made a link in access to the worksheet. For grins and
giggles, I managed to change the value in the field while
in access and the program bombed. Now I can't get back
into the workbook and I really need the information in it.
Is there anyone that has ever experience anything like
this or might be able to recomend a way I can salvage or
get my data out of the workbook?

I found the message below from Pete. It is exactly what is
taking place on my computer which is what I tried (not as
eloquently as Pete) to describe below. Pete has nailed the
specific verbiage I am experiencing. The details of my
situation are in part two below. If there is help out
there, I am all ears.

Regards,
Dave

I have been experiencing a problem over the past couple of
days trying to open Excel. I am using Excel 2000.

Every time I try to open the application the following
message appears:

" Excel.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error
log is being created"

When I try to restart the program I still get the same
error message. I have also tried to reboot and the same
error message occurs.

I can see all my excel files when I go into Explorer but I
can not open any of the files.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions. Prior to
this problem occuring I have not had any problems with
excel. I am also not having any problems with my other
Office applications

Thanks!
