We have upgraded to Office XP. I have a speadsheet with
links to external data. When I open it and click
on "don't update," all my data shows up with #name. It
works fine if I open the file in its native Excel 97
format, but Excel 97 is going to be removed from our
computers. HELP!!

#NAME? makes me think that the formulas are using functions from the Analysis
ToolPak that Excel 97 may have been configured to load automatically but Excel
2002/XP hasn't yet been configured to load. Could you provide one of the
formulas that's evaluating to #NAME?

I am assuming the database you are trying hit for the
external data is a Microsoft Access 97 DB. Starting with
Office 2000 the structure of Access db's changed. You will
have to convert the DB to a 2000 db in order for your
spreadsheet to work.

To convert it just open it with Acess XP and answer yes to
the convert question.

Thanks,

Greg

One of the formulas in Excel 2002 is:

=VLOOKUP($D2,'C:\Jan 2004\Buying Guide\[Jan 2004 BG
Working.xls]Tbl_Working'!$B:$BN,61,FALSE)

The error is a #N/A error. I have been looking into this
in depth for all afternoon. I finally found some
information on the Knowledge Base. It seems that there
are two issues in this conversion process and it is "by
design," as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles 327006 and
288853 state. It's to correct "problems with the Excel
97 calculation engine." Also, defined names are not
removed when you break a link. It all seems rather
cumbersome! I wish there were any easier way! If you
know of one, I'd love to hear it! Thank you.
